Calysto DLG

Skill Level INT/INT
Wingspan 57.48 in.
Wingarea 368.88 in²
Weight 12-13 oz.
Wingloading 4-5 oz/ft²
Airfoil HQW-2/8

This beautiful two-channel DLG sailplane has a five-piece wing and is supplied with a standard tail for conventional elevator and rudder control. The Calysto has been designed to fly easily for the novice flyer and although a strong sailplane will finish out at a light weight. The five piece wing is quad tapered and comes with a flat center section and dihedral tips.

The kit is almost ready to fly and comes with a lightweight, fiberglass fuse, and a painted and trimmed canopy. The real beauty is in the wing construction. The mostly conventional wing construction of ribs with a full span re-enforcing carbon fiber spar is very light and strong.  It is a simple and elegant solution to adding a spar to a lightweight wing. The wingtips are fashioned from lightweight balsa sheet and reinforced for discus launches.

All that is left to the builder is to glue the wing sections together, install the radio equipment and linkages. The illustrated instruction booklet is written in English for ease of assembly. The Calysto DLG  can take a normal sized receiver but we recommend a small micro receiver such as the Hitec 555 or FMA Extreme and sub micro servos such as the Hitec HS-50, HS-55's or the Cirrus CS-10BB, CS20BB. This equipment will keep the weight to a minimum and performance to the max.

The wing is very stiff yet light and is covered with Oracover covering. The covering is a bright transparent red with yellow lettering for great  visibility and contrast.   The fuselage is painted yellow with a black canopy cover.  We are amazed at the elegant construction and finish of this model.

The HQW-2/8 airfoil is low drag but with the low wingloading achieves a low sinkrate for thermaling at low speeds. Combined with the pleasing but conservative planform results in a DLG that is a perfect match for the less experienced pilot and fun for the experienced pilot at well. The light construction reacts to the smallest amount of lift and will maneuver with no surprises. At a flying weight of 12-13 oz, it’s an outstanding performer. Handling is what you would expect, very simple and easy for the intermediate or novice pilot.
