The Passat comes from the makers of the XL 3200 and Elipsoid. It is
designed for thermal flying and is equipped with flaps and ailerons for control and
landing. A little smaller than the Elipsoid but
larger than the typical 2 meter sailplane the Passat has performance and handling in a
great combination. The Passat is capable, due to the large and effective flaps, of landing
in a smaller area but will soar quite well in moderate to light lift.
We particularly like the size because it lends itself to both slope and thermal flying and
is a lot of fun to bring with you on trips. It comes to you almost ready to fly and is
ready-built with the wings and tails covered in Oracover, requiring only the fitting of
the T-tail and rudder to the fuselage. All hardware is included and a few short evenings
will have you ready to fly. All surfaces are finished and covered with the fuselage
prepainted in the molded a gel coat white. Note: when you look at the finish and covering
of this model it is really mindboggling. The finish and covering are virtually perfect.
All the seams are straight with all hinges doubled for strength. Very very clean and well
made!
The finished fuselage is a colored, gel-coated fiberglass with a blue gel-coated canopy.
It’s almost ready ready to go!
The wings have ailerons on the outer panels and flaps on the inner section for superb
landing control. All surfaces are sanded, covered with Oracover, hinged and completely
finished. The two piece wing is beautiful and has an special tip curved down for the
maximum in planform performance. The wings are foam sheeted with balsa and internally
reinforced for strength, airfoil integrity and reduced drag. The wing is strong enough for
moderate aerobatics. Servo bays are installed and are ready for the wiring. Handling with
the large ailerons is immediate and very smooth. The T-tail is very effective and stays
out of the way for those grass landings. The Rudder coupled to the ailerons results in a
very nicely coordinated turn and is very efficient for thermaling flights.
The Passat is easily transportable. The wings and tails break down and the whole sailplane
can fit in the original box.
The Passat flies very well. The sailplane is easy to see and will climb in the lightest
lift. The 102" wingspan gives excellent glide performance and the low wingloading and
good airfoil makes this a great choice for a thermal electric sailplane.
The Passat is perfect for sport thermal flying and with the proper radio gear it is
possible to fly the Passat at a reasonable wingloading for moderate weather thermal
flying. The thermaling ability of the Passat is fantastic with an incredible capability to
stay up in moderate lift and still penetrate to find the far off field thermals. The
ailerons can be used in the crow position for increased control on landing and for
enhanced glide path control. We have made sure that the flaps are hinged on the bottom so
that you can get a full 90 degrees of flap travel for landing in the smallest fields.
We recommend the HS-85BB
and HS 85MG
servos for the all surfaces. The best receiver is the Hitec SuperSlim.
